Don’t miss the National Gallery of Victoria’s modern art blockbuster, on now direct from the Big Apple.

Watch the video below for a peek into this stunning exhibition.

Reinforcing Melbourne’s position as Australia’s cultural heartland, more than 230 works direct from New York’s famous Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) are pulling huge crowds at the world-first exhibition: MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).

And talk about a star-studded line up – Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Georgia O’Keefe and Frida Kahlo are just some of the big names featured.

Co-curated by the NGV and MoMA as part of the Victorian Government’s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series, the exhibition spans art movements from the past 130 years in eight themed rooms covering the entire floor of NGV International in St Kilda Road.

It leads the viewer on a journey from late 19th century urban and industrial transformation, through to the radicalism of the 1960s and 1970s and on to the digital present. Drawing on MoMA’s six curatorial divisions, paintings, drawings and photos feature alongside furniture, sculpture and graphic design.

To launch a blockbuster of this scale is no walk in the park. It’s taken three intense years of planning to get this world-premiere exhibition off the ground. In fact, the majority of pieces have travelled to Australia for the very first time and almost half have never been shown outside of MoMA.

The end result is that this will go down as one of Melbourne’s most significant modern and contemporary art exhibitions.

The exhibition runs until 7 October 2018.

Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series

Since 2004, the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series has attracted 5.7 million local, national and international visitors and contributed half a billion dollars to the state’s economy.
