PAX Australia to stay in Melbourne until 2019

PaxAus-bannerThe Victorian Government has secured the right for Melbourne to continue to host the Australian leg of the world’s largest digital games festival, the Penny Arcade Expo Australia (PAX Aus), for the next five years until 2019.

The move means that this iconic event will continue to attract the world’s biggest and most influential digital games developers, publishers and enthusiastic players.

Hosting PAX Aus further consolidates Melbourne as the events capital of Australia and a leading player in the global digital games industry, which is the fastest growing sector of the worldwide audio visual entertainment sector with an estimated value in 2014 of over A$72 billion.

This announcement has been made during Melbourne’s inaugural Digital Games Week, which includes a broad range of events promoting the games industry, and is running until Sunday 2 November. The Victoria Government secured PAX Aus in late 2012 – then and still the only PAX event outside of its home in the United States.

PAX Aus 2013 featured more than 100 exhibitors and sold out three months ahead of the event, attracting thousands of visitors over three days to the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.

This year’s festival at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre will be even bigger, attracting more visitors and hosting 150 international and Australian exhibitors.

Robert Khoo, President of Penny Arcade said “Melbourne is the games hub for Asia Pacific and clearly the best location for PAX Aus. We have had fantastic support from the Victorian Government and are looking forward to growing PAX Aus in Melbourne over the next five years”.

Victoria accounts for 40 per cent of Australia’s digital games industry and is home to 75 game development studios, animation houses and games industry service providers, from leading global companies through to smaller boutique developers.

Since December 2010, the Victorian Government has provided over A$4 million in investment and marketing support to the digital games industry.

Australia’s premier games industry conference, Game Connect: Asia Pacific focuses specifically on skills development, industry trends and international business matching has just been held in Melbourne from October 28-29.

I wish you all a Happy PAX Aus 2014.
